About Frontier Girls

Raising Women of Honor to Be the Leaders of the Future

Frontier Girls is a structured, scouting-style program for girls, created by Kerry Cordy in 2007. Built around hands-on learning, community service, outdoor adventure, leadership, patriotism, and character development, Frontier Girls gives girls opportunities to explore their interests while developing the skills and confidence they will need throughout their lives.

Frontier Girls began when Kerry, a homeschool mom and longtime troop leader, wanted a program that combined the traditions and structure she valued in scouting with the flexibility to pursue an enormous variety of interests. What began as a program created for her own family and local community grew through word of mouth as other families and troop leaders discovered it.

Today, the Frontier Girls curriculum is used by families and independently operated troops in communities across the country.

A Curriculum, Not a National Organization

Frontier Girls is different from many traditional scouting programs because it is not a nonprofit organization that girls or volunteers join. Frontier Girls is a program offered by Curiosity Untamed LLC.

Families may use the program independently, while churches, homeschool groups, community organizations, nonprofits, and individuals may use the curriculum to operate their own Frontier Girls troops.

Each troop is independently organized and operated. Curiosity Untamed LLC provides the Frontier Girls curriculum, badges, awards, program standards, and resources, but does not own, operate, supervise, or staff local troops.

This structure gives troops considerable flexibility. A church may incorporate Frontier Girls into its youth ministry. A veterans’ organization may place additional emphasis on patriotism and service. A homeschool group may incorporate badge work into its educational activities. Individual troops may develop their own traditions, activities, schedules, and priorities while following the Frontier Girls program.

No two troops need to look exactly alike.

What Do Frontier Girls Do?

Frontier Girls learn by doing. Girls can earn badges covering everything from outdoor skills, science, history, cooking, crafts, and animals to technology, personal development, home skills, the arts, and much more.

Badge work is only part of the program. Frontier Girls also encourages girls to serve their communities, develop leadership skills, spend time outdoors, explore new interests, practice responsibility, and work toward long-term higher awards.

The goal is not simply to collect badges. It is to give girls a reason to try new things, develop useful skills, discover what interests them, and gradually become capable, responsible young women.

Program Goals

With well over 1,000 badges across nine Areas of Discovery, Frontier Girls encourages girls to become lifelong learners.

Badge requirements provide a framework for exploring practical skills, hobbies, academic subjects, outdoor activities, careers, and interests that girls might never encounter otherwise. As girls grow, expectations increase so that they can revisit subjects at progressively more challenging levels.

Higher awards provide additional opportunities to develop skills across multiple areas and work toward meaningful long-term goals.

Frontier Girls encourages girls to step outside their comfort zones, try something new, and build a collection of knowledge and practical skills they can carry into adulthood.

The Frontier Girls motto is:

Service is an important part of putting that motto into action.

Frontier Girls are encouraged to notice needs in their families, troops, neighborhoods, and communities and look for ways they can help. Troops are highly encouraged to participate in service projects throughout the year, and girls may also perform service individually.

Service does not have to be complicated or involve a large organized project. It might mean helping maintain the location where a troop meets, collecting supplies for people in need, assisting an elderly neighbor, supporting veterans and military families, caring for animals, cleaning up a local park, or volunteering with a community organization.

The purpose is to help girls understand that leadership begins with noticing what needs to be done and being willing to help.

Patriotism has been part of Frontier Girls since the program began.

Frontier Girls teaches patriotism as love of country, respect for those who serve it, appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy, and a willingness to contribute positively to our communities.

Frontier Girls does not promote political parties, candidates, or political positions. Girls are instead encouraged to learn about their country’s history and traditions, practice good citizenship, respect the flag, participate in service, and show appreciation for military members, veterans, first responders, and their families.

Girls from military families may wear a special Patriot insignia on their uniforms in recognition of the sacrifices military families make.

CHARACTER AND LEADERSHIP

Character and leadership are woven throughout the Frontier Girls program.

Girls are given opportunities to take responsibility, make decisions, help plan activities, teach skills to others, serve their communities, and take on leadership roles as they grow.

The Frontier Girl Creed provides a framework for the character traits the program seeks to encourage: Loving, Joyful, Peaceful, Patient, Kind, Good, Faithful, Gentle, and Self-Controlled.

Leadership is not simply being the person in charge. Frontier Girls teaches girls to recognize needs, take responsibility, follow through on commitments, help others, and use their abilities wisely.

Girls may participate through an independently operated troop, individually as Pioneers, or through the Patriot Program when applicable. Membership provides access to the Frontier Girls badge and award curriculum, with membership options available for individual girls, families, and independently operated troops.

Other Curiosity Untamed Programs

Frontier Girls is one of the program options offered by Curiosity Untamed LLC.

Families and groups looking for a more flexible, co-ed club structure may prefer Quest Clubs, while those who simply want access to the badge curriculum without a scouting-style program may choose Curiosity Untamed.

Frontier Girls, Quest Clubs, and Curiosity Untamed all provide access to the same extensive badge curriculum, but each offers a different way to put it to use. This allows families and community groups to choose the structure that best fits what they want to accomplish.
