_____ 1.* Sample and identify at least 2 different types of apples.
_____ 2.* Learn the life cycle of an apple (seed, seedling, tree, flower, fruit, seed….).
Otters: Do four requirements including the two starred *
_____ 1.* Do Penguins requirements 1 & 2. Sample and identify at least 3 different types of apples.
_____ 2.* Learn about Johnny Appleseed. What was his real name? When did he live? Why did he become a legend?
Dolphins: Do five requirements including the two starred *
_____ 1.* Do Otters requirements 1 & 2. Sample and identify at least 4 different types of apples.
_____ 2.* Find out where apples are typically grown and in what season. Locate major apple growing regions on a map. Do they specialize in a particular type of apple, or all apples in general?
Butterflies: Do six requirements including the two starred *
_____ 1.* Do Dolphins requirements 1 & 2. Sample and identify at least 5 different types of apples.
_____ 2.* Find out what types of vitamins and minerals are in apples. How many grams of fiber does a typical apple have? What health benefits do these provide your body?
Eagles: Do seven requirements including the two starred *
_____ 1.* Do Butterflies requirements 1 & 2. Sample and identify at least 6 different types of apples.
_____ 2.* Make at least 3 recipes using apples. If you choose to use optional requirements that involve recipes, these must be done in addition to the three mentioned in this requirement.
Owls: Do nine requirements including the two starred *
_____ 1.* Do Eagles requirements 1 & 2.
_____ 2.* Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach children, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.
Optional Requirements:
_____ 3. Read at least three myths or stories where an apple plays an important role. Examples might include Snow White, Adam and Eve, the Golden Apple of Greek mythology, or The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.
_____ 4. Visit an apple orchard and pick your own. You can also visit a fruit stand, or grocery store, and price out different types of apples.
_____ 5. Make a hot apple recipe such as baked apples, apple muffins, apple butter, apple galettes, or apple pie.
_____ 6. Make a cold apple recipe such as Waldorf salad, fruit salad, or apples with peanut butter.
_____ 7. Make an apple drink such as hot apple cider or an apple smoothie.
_____ 8. Make an apple craft such as apple prints, apple candle holders, or shrunken apple heads.
_____ 9. Participate in a community service project that has something to do with apples. Examples might include donating apples or apple recipe items to a shelter, shut-ins, food bank, etc., or holding an apple bake sale or craft sale to donate money to a local charity.
_____ 10. Find out what careers involve apples – examples might include: Farmer, Produce Manager, Fruit Stand Owner, or Chef. What education is needed for this job? What type of pay could you expect? What type of hours might you need to work? Where might you need to live?
_____ 11. Visit your county fair and see what apple items were entered. How is the judging conducted? Enter an apple recipe or project yourself if you can.
_____ 12. Learn a song or poem about apples.
_____ 13. Teach younger children something about apples.
_____14. Play an apple game.
_____ 15. Dehydrate apples. Try different recipes such as dipping the apples in maple syrup first, or in cinnamon and sugar.
_____ 16. Learn how to juice apples and try the fresh juice.
_____ 17. Find out how to keep an apple from turning brown. Why does it work? What makes the apple turn brown in the first place?
_____ 18. Find out about apple world records, such as the heaviest apple or the most people apple bobbing at once. What other un-verified records can you find such as the longest apple peel or the tallest apple tower?
