You may use any higher level requirement as an optional requirement.
Penguin: Do three requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Know the first and last names of each member of your family.
_____2.* Discuss what role each person in your family plays. What are their responsibilities?

Otter: Do four requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Penguin requirements 1 & 2. Know the names of your cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

_____2.* Where did your ancestors come from and how long has your family been in America?

 

Dolphin: Do five requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Otter requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* With a parent, discuss different types of families. Examples might include traditional two parent married families; not married parents; single parents; divorced parents; grandparents raising grandchildren; adoption, etc. What are the pros and cons of each family type? Discuss why you should always be kind to everyone regardless of what type of family they come from.

 

Butterfly: Do six requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Dolphin requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Based on your family heritage, what health issues might you, or your descendants, have to deal with?

 

Eagle: Do seven requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Butterfly requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Find out what government or charitable agencies there are in your community that help families. What help do they provide? How can people find out about their services? What education and training is needed to work for one of these agencies?

 

Owl: Do nine requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2

_____2.* Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.

 

Optional Requirements:

_____3. What does your book of faith say about family?

_____4. How are family members treated in different parts of the world? Choose at least three different countries with cultures different than ours to research. What role does each family member play in their culture?

_____5. Earn the Genealogy badge at your current level.

_____6. Earn a character badge that will help you in your family relationship such as kindness, patience, or responsibility. Be able to explain why this character trait is important in a family.

_____7. Create a family scrapbook.

_____8. Make a list of your family traditions. These could be anything from what you eat on Sunday nights to how you celebrate holidays.

_____9. Pay attentions to the families you see on TV, in the movies, or in books you read. How are these families the same as yours? How are they different? Do you know anyone with families like these?

_____10. Have a family meeting to create a goals chart. Have each member of the family list a goal they want to reach within the next year and put it on the calendar. Then brainstorm all the necessary steps to reach that goal and put those tasks on the calendar as well. Use the calendar to hold each other accountable and help each member reach their goal.

_____11. Discuss what chores need to be done around your house and the capabilities of each family member to complete them. Then create a chore chart outlining each family member’s responsibilities for household chores.

_____12. Interview at least 10 people (non-related) about what family means to them. Is there something that all answers have in common? What stands out the most to you?

_____13. Participate in a community service project that revolves around family. Ideas might include food or clothing drives, suitcase drives for foster kids, serving dinner at a local homeless shelter, decorating a room at a battered women’s shelter, etc.

_____14. Create a family memory box. Have each member of your family write down as many happy family memories as they can and put each one on a small slip of paper. Put all the papers in a decorated box and pull one out each day to relive a happy memory.

_____15. Talk to seniors in your family or community about what family life used to be like. What household chores needed to be done? What did families do for recreation and fun?

_____16. Talk to your parents about your household budget. Find out what expenses your family has each month. How can you help your family reduce expenses to free up money for other things?

_____17. Interview at least 6 different parents. Find out what being a parent means to them. How did their lives change when they had kids? What is the hardest part about being a parent? What is the best part?
