This badge may be earned multiple times, once for each type of racing you learn about. Examples may include Indy Car Racing, NASCAR, Formula One, Sprint Car Racing, Drag Racing, Go-karts, Rally Car Racing, Sport Car Racing, Off Road Racing, Midgets, etc.

 

(You may use any higher level requirement as optional requirements.)

 

Penguin: Do three requirements including the two starred *

_____1 * Watch a race in person or on TV of your chosen type of car racing.

_____2.* Be able to identify your type of race car compared to at least three other race car types.

 

Otter: Do four requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Penguin requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Learn about the history of your type of car racing. When and where did it begin? How have the cars changed?

 

Dolphin: Do five requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Otter requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Find out where your type of car racing takes place. Where are the most popular tracks? Locate them on a map. How many races do they have each year?

 

Butterfly: Do six requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Dolphin requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Learn about at least three drivers for your type of car racing. Who do they drive for? What is their current standing? How many races have they won? Recognize their colors and sponsors.

 

Eagle: Do seven requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Butterfly requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Understand how sponsorship works. Know the top 10 sponsors of your type of car racing. Why would a company want to spend so much money to have their name on a race car? How can a company maximize their return for their sponsorship dollars?

 

Owl: Do nine requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.

 

Optional Requirements:

_____3. Earn the Race Car Badge at your current level.

_____4. Research careers in car racing. This might include drivers, pit crew, team owners, promoters, etc. What education or training do you need? What salary can you expect? What hours might you have to work? Will you have to travel?

_____5. Visit a museum or exhibit about your type of car racing.

_____6. Visit the pits at a car race and talk to some of the drivers.

_____7. What fan clubs are there for your type of racing? Collect at least 3 pieces of memorabilia for your type of racing.

_____8. Learn about what tracks are made of for your type of racing. How are the tracks designs to both increase speed as well as provide safety for the drivers and audience?

_____9. Show that you understand audience etiquette and know how to be a considerate fan. Earn a character badge that you can use as a race fan such as patience (for standing in long lines), respect (for respecting fans of other drivers) or sportsmanship (for being a good sport whether your favorite driver wins or loses.)

_____10. Make a list of as many licensed goods as you can that you can purchase with your favorite driver’ s logo. Items might include t-shirts, key chains, mugs, hats, etc. Can you think of any other products that sell well? Understand what licensing means and why some companies can produce products with your driver’s logo while others cannot.

_____11. Learn who the top 10 drivers in your type of racing are. Who holds records for the most wins? The most wrecks? The most points?

_____12. Find out what makes your type of car racing different from others. Compare tracks, car styles, engines, point systems, etc.
