Penguins: Do three requirements including the one starred *.
____ 1*. What is jewelry? Look at some examples of jewelry and find out what they are made of. Know the following jewelry terms: necklace, bracelet, ring, earrings, tiara and brooch.
Otters: Do four requirements including the two starred *.
____ 1*. Do Penguin requirement 1*.
____ 2*. Take a field trip to a jewelry store or look through jewelry catalogs or through a jewelry site online.
Dolphins: Do five requirements including the two starred *.
____ 1*. Do Otter requirements 1 & 2.
____ 2*. Be able to recognize the following gemstones: sapphire, amethyst, ruby, emerald, diamond, garnet, opal and topaz.
Butterflies: Do six requirements including the two starred *.
____ 1*. Do Dolphin requirements 1 & 2.
____ 2*. Be able to identify the following semi-precious stones: lapis lazuli, tiger’s eye, coral, pearl, jade, onyx, malachite, tourmaline, amber, turquoise, peridot, citrine and aquamarine.
Eagles: Do seven requirements including the two starred *.
____ 1*. Do Butterfly requirements 1 & 2.
____ 2*. Be able to identify the following metals: gold, white gold, silver and platinum. Know what is meant by “carat” and what it means if something is “24 carat gold”. Also be able to identify enamel, and know what a “cameo” is.
Owls: Do 9 requirements including the two starred *

_____ 2.* Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.
____ 3. Read a nonfiction book about jewelry or watch a documentary.
____ 4. Go to a thrift store and look at the jewelry for sale. How much do they cost? How does the jewelry you find differ from that sold new in stores.
____ 5. Earn the Gemstones badge at your level.
____ 6. Make a piece of jewelry.
____ 7. Learn about a famous jeweler’s shop, such as Graff, Tiffany & Co., or Harry Winston. When was it started, and by whom? With your parent’s permission, look at their website; which piece of jewelry is your favorite? How much does it cost?
____ 8. Wristwatches have become classed as an item of jewelry. Learn about a famous maker of wristwatches, such as Rolex or Cartier.
____ 9. Make a timeline of at least 20 events in the history of jewelry.
____ 10. Earn the Jewelry Making badge at your level.
____ 11. Research famous pieces of jewelry from history, such as Princess Diana’s engagement ring, the Marie Louise diadem, the Vanderbilt Rose or the Vladimir Tiara
____ 12. What is costume or fashion jewelry? How does it differ from “fine” jewelry?
____ 13. Learn how to clean jewelry properly.
____ 14. Research careers relating to jewelry and its history, such as an antiques expert, a jeweler, a lapidarist, or a museum curator.
____ 15. Learn the basic principles of metal plating. What is plating? What is electroplating? How can you tell if a piece of jewelry is solid metal or plated?
____ 16. What is the difference between adult jewelry and children’s jewelry? What laws are in place to protect children from hazardous jewelry such as those made with lead or that are small enough to choke on?
