Penguins: Complete three requirements including those starred.

_____*1. What is a microscope? Be able to recognize a microscope from a picture.

_____*2. Understand some of what microscopes are used for. Look at three things under a microscope.


Otters: Complete four requirements including those starred.

_____*1. Do Penguin *1 and *2. What’s the difference between a magnifying glass and a microscope? When was the first microscope made? What are some of the things for which microscopes are used? Look at something with a magnifying glass and then with a microscope.

_____*2. Find a diagram of a microscope with at least five blanks for labeling parts and fill in the blanks. Ask for adult help with focusing the microscope for the following requirements.


Dolphins: Complete five requirements including those starred.

_____*1. Do Otter #1 & 2. Find a diagram of a microscope with at least six blanks for labeling parts and fill in the blanks.

_____*2. Watch a demonstration of how to adjust and focus a microscope and how to make a slide.


Butterflies: Complete six requirements including those starred.

_____*1. Do Dolphin #1 & 2. Make a list of jobs where people sometimes use microscopes. List at least five good things that came from the invention of the microscope.

_____*2. Learn to focus a microscope and a make a slide.


Eagles: Complete seven requirements including those starred.

_____*1. Do Butterfly #1. Find out how small things can be and still be seen by microscope. What are black light microscopes and electron microscopes?

_____*2. Do Butterfly #2. Learn how and when to use stains and immersion oil.


Owl:  Do 9 requirements including the 2 starred:

_____ 1. * Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2

_____ 2. * Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone.   You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge.   If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.


Optional Requirements:

Requirements 3-6 increase by the level. Penguins and Otters must look at or draw 1 of each, Dolphins must do 2, Butterflies must do 3, Eagles must do 4, and Owls must do 5.

_____3. Look at an item from the animal kingdom under the microscope (anything from amoeba to a piece of a feather).

_____4. Look at an item from the plant kingdom under the microscope (tiny alga to a large leaf).

_____5. Look at an item from neither the plant or animal kingdoms under the microscope (such as salt or sugar).

_____6. Make a drawing of something you see under a microscope. It must be magnified at least 30 times.

_____7. Visit a laboratory where people use a microscope for work.

_____8. Read a biography of Louis Pasteur, or another famous scientist who used a microscope in their work.

_____9. Learn how to take care of a microscope, how to clean slides and cover slips. Find out how much different microscopes cost—those used in a junior high versus a professional instrument.

_____10. Interview someone who uses a microscope at work. Find out how important the microscope is to his/her work.

_____11. Help a younger girl earn this badge. (Owls must help the girl earn the entire badge, not just a few requirements)

_____12. Help a medical clinic or school buy a new microscope.
