Penguin: Do three requirements including the two starred and one optional.

 

_____ 1 * Listen to at least three different styles of music from the list below:

  • Classical

  • Folk
  • HipHop
  • A cappella
  • Beat boxing
  • Blues
  • Cadence
  • Celtic
  • Cinematic
  • Opera
  • Hymns
  • Big Band
  • New Age
  • Patriotic
  • Polka
  • Praise Songs
  • Ragtime
  • Salsa
  • Reggae
  • Gospel

(or other genre of your choice)

_____ 2.* Be able to identify at least 3 different musical instruments.

 

Otter: Do four requirements including the two starred and two optional.

_____ 1.* Do Penguin requirements 1 & 2. Listen to at least 5 styles of music and identify at least 5 different musical instruments.

_____ 2. * Be able to identify the sounds of at least 5 musical instruments.

 

Dolphin: Do five requirements including the two starred and three optional.

_____ 1.* Do Otter requirements 1 & 2. Be able to identify and describe your 5 musical styles by sound.

_____ 2.* Be able to identify by look and sound, 3 different instruments from each of the following categories:

  • Wind Instruments
  • Percussion Instruments
  • String Instruments
  • Brass Instruments

 

Butterfly: Do six requirements including the two starred and four optional.

_____ 1.* Do Dolphin requirements 1 & 2. Identify and describe at least 10 musical styles.

_____ 2.* Listen to music from at least three other countries. How does their popular or traditional music differ from ours?

 

Eagle: Do seven requirements including the two starred and five optional.

_____ 1.* Do Butterfly requirements 1 & 2. Identify and describe at least 15 musical styles.

_____ 2.* Learn about the connection between music and the mind. Explain how music affects emotions,

memories and learning abilities. Share your findings either through an essay, booklet, poster, speech or other medium.

 

Owls:  Do 9 requirements including the two starred.

_____ 1. *  Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2

_____ 2. *  Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone.   You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge.   If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.

 

Optional Requirements:

_____ 3. Create a collage or poster of at least 20 different musical instruments.

_____ 4. Earn the Music History badge

_____ 5. Visit a musical instrument store and find out what instruments are the most popular. What is their cost range? Where might you be able to get lessons?

_____ 6. Discuss the use of lyrics in a song. How do lyrics make you feel? Why is it important to listen to music with clean, uplifting lyrics rather than music with foul and hateful language?

_____ 7. Attend a concert of any musical style, or watch a video of one. (this requirement may be repeated with different genres of music.)

_____ 8. Visit a museum or exhibit of music or musical instruments.

_____ 9. Make a musical instrument of your own.

_____ 10. Learn to sing a song from at least three different musical styles or eras.

_____ 11. Participate in a community service project that involves music. Examples might include:

  • Christmas carol at a nursing home
  • Play an instrument in a free concert
  • Sing in your church choir
  • Teach younger kids some new songs or how to play an instrument

_____ 12. Learn about careers involving music appreciation. Examples might include auditorium mangers, event coordinators, music producers, professional musicians, etc. What education and training might you need? What salary could you expect? What hours might you have to work? Where might you have to live?

_____ 13. Watch a musical either on film or on stage.

_____ 14. Attend an opera or watch one on video.

_____ 15. Watch a silent movie. What role did the music play? Discuss how music can be an important part of storytelling.
