Penguin: Do three requirements including the two starred and one optional.
_____ 1.* Learn about how musical instruments have changed over time. Look at pictures and learn about at least 3 ancient instruments and their modern counterpart.
_____ 2.* Make an instrument of your own. It might be a simple drum, a pipe of some type, or even a kazoo. How do you think people in the past made instruments like yours?
Otter: Do four requirements including the two starred and two optional.

_____ 2.* What is a musical period? What are the four main musical periods? Learn the order in which they come and listen to music from each.
Dolphin: Do five requirements including the two starred and three optional.
_____ 1.* Do Otter requirements 1 & 2
_____ 2.* In any of the four musical periods(Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern-includes the Impressionist period) Learn about one composer. Where was he from? What period was he in? What was he famous for? What instrument did he play?
Butterfly: Do six requirements including the two starred and four optional.
_____ 1.* Do Dolphin requirements 1 & 2
_____ 2.* Learn about the instruments from different periods of music. What instruments are prevalent now that either were not popular in an earlier period or were somehow different? What instruments are there that are now “extinct” or not as widely used as they once were?
Eagle: Do seven requirements including the two starred and five optional.
_____ 1.* Do Butterfly requirements 1 & 2
_____ 2.* Pick four composers (one from each musical period-must be different from who you picked in Dolphin #2) and learn about them. Were they famous in their day? Where were they from? What instruments or voice types did he/she compose for? When were they born? When did they die?
Owls: Do 9 requirements including the two starred.

_____ 2. * Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.
_____ 3. Pick two musical periods (preferably consecutive ones) and learn about the differences between them. Were there different instruments that were invented? Was there a composer that greatly influenced the change in styles?
_____ 4. What kind of careers are available if one wanted to go into music history? What kind of education must you acquire? How much does the average individual get paid in one of those jobs?
_____ 5. What is the difference between folk songs and classical music? How have folk songs influenced composers? Are there any specific composers that took folk songs and made them their own?
_____ 6. Earn the Music, Music Appreciation, or Musical instrument badge.
_____ 7. Learn about the modern period. What makes songs by impressionist, blues, jazz, and rock and roll composers different from each other?
_____ 8. How has music been used politically? Are there countries in which songs have been banned for too skeptical or broad an outlook?
_____ 9. What countries are most famous for their music? Why? If you are a Butterfly or Eagle find out where most classical composers, verses modern composers are from.
_____ 10. Create a game of some sort to help others learn the composers and their eras. Can be a crossword puzzle, board game, a puzzle, word find, etc.
_____ 11. Create a timeline of musical styles. Include at least 15 different musical styles such as:
- Dixieland Jazz
- A cappella
- Beat boxing
- Big Band
- New Age
- Praise Songs
_____ 12. Make a collage of composers or instruments through-out history.
_____ 13. What does your book of faith say about music? How has music been used in your religion through-out the years? Has it changed at all?
_____ 14. Research the history of trail music, folk songs, or Gregorian chants. How did they come into existence?
_____ 15. Research pre-baroque period music. Can you find any recordings of Renaissance music? Does anyone still perform that type of music?
_____ 16. Research the history of one particular music genre. How has it progressed over the years? Where there any spin-offs of it? Try and find a recording of an early performance and then a later one.
_____ 17. Research cultural responses to different genres of music. Why were they rejected or accepted?
