Penguin: Do three requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* What is artificial food coloring made of? Share your findings with a friend or family member.

_____2.* Use three edible foods to make a natural food dye. Which did you like best?

 

Otter: Do four requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Penguin requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* What seven food colorings are allowed in the USA and what are they found in?

 

Dolphin: Do five requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Otter requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Use your natural dye to dye clothing. Does it work? How can you intensify the colors?

 

Butterfly: Do six requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Dolphin requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Choose three different ingredients to produce the same color (i.e. beets, strawberries, cherries, etc) and compare color results.

 

Eagles: Do seven requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Butterfly requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Do a blind taste test with natural dyes vs. artificial dyes. Can you taste a difference?

 

Owl: Do nine requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.

 

Optional requirements:

_____3. Learn the history of food dye (both natural and artificial) in the USA.

_____4. Research how two of the ingredients in your natural dye benefit your health.

_____5. What happens when you add other ingredients like sugar, salt, etc?

_____6. What are the primary colors? Can you make them with natural colors?

_____7. Penguins & Otters Only: Name three different things that have food coloring in them.

_____8. Find two things that you are surprised have food coloring in them.

_____9. What is carmine? Research and find one product that contains it.

_____10. Write a few paragraphs explaining why natural food colorings should be used rather than artificial dyes.

_____11. Can you mix colors to make secondary colors and tertiary colors?

_____12. What happens when you add an acid base such as vinegar or baking soda to natural food colorings?

_____13. Research careers involving natural food colorings. What type of facility might you work in and what type of education might you need?

_____14. Make a snack that is colored with your natural dye and share it with someone.

_____16. Participate in a community service project involving natural food dye, such as making different baked goods to give away or coloring clothing to donate.

_____17. Does the amount of natural dye you use affect the taste of the food? Conduct an experiment using different amounts of natural dye on three types of the same food and compare the taste.
