Penguin: Do three requirements including the two starred and one optional.
_____ 1 * Learn about what a pattern is and how it is used to create clothing and accessories.
_____ 2.* Learn how to trace using a stencil and ruler, and learn how to use a soft measuring tape.
Otter: Do four requirements including the two starred and two optional.
_____ 1.* Do Penguin requirements 1 & 2.
_____ 2. * Make a simple pattern for a vest. This can be for yourself, a doll, a puppet, or even a pet. Understand what a seam allowance is. How do you allow for one when making your pattern?
Dolphin: Do five requirements including the two starred and three optional.
_____ 1.* Do Otter requirements 1 & 2.
_____ 2.* Take proper body measurements for someone that includes each of the following:
Shoulders: Measure in a straight line from the outer edge from one shoulder to the other.
Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, wrapping the measuring tape around your back, under your arms, and forward to the fullest part of your bust.
Natural Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your torso. Make sure you are relaxed and not sucking in your breath or slouching.
Hips: With you feet together, measure around the widest part of your hips (usually the area where your hip bones are located).
Rise: Starting in front at your natural waist, measure down between your legs and back up to your natural waist on the other side
Inseam: Measure from your crotch to the inside of your ankle.
Arms: Measure from the outside of your shoulder to your wrist.
Butterfly: Do six requirements including the two starred and four optional.
_____ 1.* Do Dolphin requirements 1 & 2.
_____ 2.* Make a pattern for a skirt or pair of pants that you can wear.
Eagle: Do seven requirements including the two starred and five optional.
_____ 1.* Do Butterfly requirements 1 & 2.
_____ 2.* Make a pattern for a shirt or dress that you can wear.
Owl: Do 9 requirements including the 2 starred:
_____ 1. * Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2
_____ 2. * Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.
Optional Requirements:
_____ 3. Make a pattern for a costume accessory such as fairy wings, a cape, or a bag.
_____ 4. Make a list of at least 5 different types of paper or material you could use for pattern making. Examples might include freezer paper or wrapping paper. What are the pros and cons of using each type of paper or material on your list? How sturdy are they? What do they cost? How easy are they to draw on and cut?
_____ 5. Earn the fashion design badge
_____ 6. Create a pattern by disassembling a ready made piece of clothing. Carefully pull apart all stitching and lay the individual pieces out on paper. Trace to create a pattern. If you are earning the sewing badge, fashion design, or advanced sewing, try using your pattern to recreate the piece of clothing in a new way.
_____ 7. Read a book about pattern making.
_____ 8. Learn to identify the following pattern making tools and know what they are used for:
- Pattern notcher
- Awl
- Tracing wheel
- Cloth tape measure
- Cloth weight
- Draping pins
- Transparent ruler
- Transparent French Curve
- Dress form
_____ 9. Research the difference between adjustable and set size dress forms. What are the pros and cons of each?
_____ 10. Earn the fashion design badge
_____ 11. Create a pattern for a home décor item. Examples might include a bed skirt, pillow case, slip cover, quilt, or valance.
_____ 12. Create a pattern for a craft such as a pillow, tote bag, beanbag, Christmas ornament, or stuffed animal.
_____ 13. Learn about “ready to wear” clothing and the industrial method of pattern making used to create it. The industrial method does not create patterns on personal sizes, but according to the physical conformation of the target of end-consumers they refer to.
_____ 14. Create a pattern for beachwear.
_____ 15. Create a pattern for a pair of slippers.
_____ 16. Learn about pattern grading and how to adjust the same pattern for smaller or larger sizes.
_____ 17. Learn how to add darts or pleats to your pattern.
