(You may use a higher level requirement as an optional requirement)
Penguins: Do 3 requirements including the one starred.
_____ 1.* Learn what renewable or alternative energy is.
Otters: Do 4 requirements including the 2 starred.
_____ 1.* Do Penguin requirement #1
_____ 2. Learn the types of traditional renewable energy available: Solar, water, wind. Look at pictures of each type and understand the basics of how they work.
Dolphins: Do 5 requirements including the 2 starred.
_____ 1.* Do Otter requirements #1 & #2. Understand what each of the following renewable energy sources are.
_____ 2.* Learn how a windmill works and what they were used for in ancient times. Learn how that is now being parlayed into electrical & mechanical energy in wind farms in Southern California and across the country
Butterflies: Do 6 requirements including the 2 starred.
_____ 1.* Do Dolphin requirements # 1 & #2.
_____ 2.* Understand what it means to live off-grid
Eagles: Do 7 requirements including the 2 starred.
_____ 1. * Do Butterfly requirements #1 & 2.
_____ 2.* Learn about plug-in hybrid automobiles that use both traditional gas and electric modes of power. Research a hybrid car that doesn't need to be plugged in, if possible, take a test ride in one and observe the on-screen demonstration of how the car charges while driving.
Owl: Do 9 requirements including the 2 starred:
_____ 1. * Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2
_____ 2. * Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.
_____ 3. Learn about Methane gas and how it is produced from cow manure and landfills. What is it used for?
_____ 4. Learn what biodiesel is and what it is used for.
_____5. Learn about the new algae fuel being developed at Arizona State University Lab of Algae Research and Biotechnology
_____ 6. Build a model vehicle that uses alternative energy to move.
_____7. List five ways to accomplish tasks using renewable energy
_____8. Use a kinetic energy scooter or other riding toy, and study how it uses renewable energy to work.
_____ 9. Explain what regenerative braking systems are and how they might be used in the future.
_____ 10. Make a solar clock or other small solar device.
_____ 11. Learn how a water wheel powered sawmills in the old days. Show how that could be utilized today?
_____ 12. Learn about ways to heat or cool using renewable energy.
_____ 13. Take a field trip to somewhere where renewable energy is produced. This might be a wind farm, a dam, a solar rooftop or field, a renewable energy laboratory, etc.
_____ 14. Create a science experiment that deals with renewable energy. Several examples can be found here: http://www.eia.gov/kids/energy.cfm?page=teacher_experiments
