Penguins: Do 3 requirements including the 2 starred

_____1.* What is a roller coaster? Be able to recognize one from a picture.

 

Otter: Do 4 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1* Do Penguin requirement 1.

_____ 2.* Find pictures of six different roller coasters. Where are they located? Find them on a map. What makes each one unique?

 

Dolphin: Do 5 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1.* Do Otter requirements 1 & 2.

_____ 2.* Learn the history of roller coasters.

 

Butterfly: Do 6 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1.* Do Dolphin requirements 1 & 2.

_____ 2.* Find out what effect a roller coaster has on your body. Why do you feel like your stomach is rising when you fall? What is a G Force? What is inertia?

 

Eagle: Do 7 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1.* Do Butterfly requirements 1 & 2.

_____ 2.* Explain the role that potential energy and kinetic energy play in the operation of a roller coaster? What is Newton’s First Law of Motion, and how does it relate to roller coasters?

 

Owl:  Do 9 requirements including the 2 starred:

_____ 1. * Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2

_____ 2. * Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.

 

 

Optional Requirements:

_____ 3. Ride a roller coaster.

_____ 4. Learn the History of roller coasters (Penguins and Otters only)

_____ 5. Make a time line of at least 10 events in roller coaster history. Butterflies and above must make a timeline of at least 15 events.

_____ 6. Watch a documentary or video about famous roller coasters or how roller coasters work.

_____ 7. (Penguins – Otters only) Read a story that has a roller coaster in it.

_____ 8. Play the game “Roller Coaster Tycoon”

_____ 9. Find out what role magnets play in the operation of newer roller coaster.

_____ 10. (Penguins – Dolphins only) Find out what effect a roller coaster has on your body. Why do you feel like your stomach is rising when you fall? What is a G Force? What is inertia?

_____ 11. What is the difference between a chain lift and catapult/launch lift? What type of braking system do most roller coasters have?

_____ 12. Read a book about roller coasters.

_____ 13. Interview a roller coaster designer or theme park manager

_____ 14. (Penguins – Butterflies only) Explain the role that potential energy and kinetic energy play in the operation of a roller coaster? What is Newton’s First Law of Motion, and how does it relate to roller coasters?

_____ 15. Find out what jobs are available that work with roller coasters. Examples might be a roller coaster designer, theme park worker, maintenance worker, film maker, etc. What education would you need for one of these jobs? What pay could you expect? What hours might you expect to work?
