Penguins: Do three requirements including the two starred

_____*1. Try two different sandwiches with different fillings. Which one did you like better? Why?

_____*2. Help someone make a sandwich. You can help by placing cheese or meat on the bread, spreading the filling on the bread, or putting the two pieces of bread together.

 

Otters: Do four requirements including the two starred

_____*1. Learn to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches without getting the outside of the sandwich messy. Learn to clean up afterwards. What are some ways to keep crumbs out of your peanut butter and jelly? Why does your family store bread, peanut butter, and jelly the way they do?

_____*2. Try a kind of sandwich you’ve never had before. You don’t need to make it yourself.

 

Dolphin: Do five requirements including the two starred

_____*1. Learn to make meat and cheese sandwiches with pre-sliced meat and cheese. Learn to adjust condiments and their amounts to please different tastes. What are some fruits and vegetables that are tasty additions to sandwiches?

_____*2. Learn the legendary story of the creation of sandwiches.

 

Butterfly: Do six requirements including the two starred

_____*1. Learn to make spreadable sandwich fillings. Make three of the following from scratch: nut butters, tuna (or other seafood such as crab & salmon) spread, egg sandwich filling, minced or ground meat fillings such as liver pate or deviled ham, jam or jelly, and/or soft cheese fillings.

_____*2. Learn to make fancy sandwiches (a) in different shapes, (b) double and triple decker sandwiches for tea parties, and (c) sandwiches decorated with cream cheese “icing” or garnishes.

 

Eagle: Do seven requirements including the two starred

_____*1. Make the bread for a sandwich. This can be brioche, English muffins, biscuits, or crackers and well as sliced sandwich bread. Discuss the pros and cons, including nutritional, of several types of bread as relating to sandwiches. Take a filling and make it into sandwiches using more than one type of bread. Compare your results.

_____*2. Help make sandwiches for a large group of people. Make at least twenty sandwiches. This can be in an assembly line. Learn to slice neatly in more than one way roast meat, cheese, and bread.

Owl:  Do 9 requirements including the 2 starred:

_____ 1. * Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2

_____ 2. * Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone.   You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge.   If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.

 

Optional Requirements:

_____3. Learn about other cultures’ methods of making “sandwiches” such as tacos, empanadas, pasties, burritos, calzones, pitas, sushi rolls, etc. Try one that is new to you.

_____4. Learn to cook sandwiches that are cooked after being put together such as grilled cheese sandwiches and calzones.

_____5. Learn to make sandwiches with hot fillings such as pulled pork, hamburgers, and hot roast beef.

_____6. Help make, sell, or serve sandwiches for a non-profit organization.

_____7. Learn to make gluten-free and dairy-free sandwiches. These can be on crackers or rice cakes if gluten-free bread is hard to obtain.

_____8. Learn how to best store and keep cold or hot all the raw ingredients for sandwich-making.

_____9. Learn about your options for packing and transporting sandwiches for trips. What can you do so they don’t get soggy, misshapen, or spoiled?

_____10. Learn about fancy little open-face sandwiches on crackers. What part of the world is famous for them? Figure out 3-Penguins & Otters, 5-Dolphins, 7-Butterflies and Up ways to garnish them.

_____11. Learn about the risks people take with their health when they eat too many sandwiches from fast food restaurants. Watch a documentary on the fast food industry.

_____12. Learn how to make at least three variations of hamburgers by stirring ingredients into the meat or by adding interesting additions on top of the burger.

_____13. Learn how to make veggie burgers from scratch.
