This badge is designed to help girls interact with those with special needs. This includes any person who might need extra help because of a medical, emotional, or learning problems. These people have special needs because they might need medicine, therapy, or extra help in school - stuff other kids don't typically need or only need once in a while.
Penguins: Do 3 requirements including the 2 starred.
Otters: Do 4 requirements including the 2 starred.
Dolphins: Do 5 requirements including the 2 starred.
Butterflies: Do 6 requirements including the 2 starred.
Eagles: Do 7 requirements including the 2 starred.
Owls: Do 9 requirements including the 2 starred and teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.
_____ 1.* Spend a day with a special needs child or adult.
_____ 2.* Choose a specific illness/defect/injury to learn about. Find out what causes the problem and how it affects the person’s daily life. Penguins must learn a game that they can play with a child who has this issue. Otters and above must create a fun game that kids with this issue could participate in.
_____ 3. Participate in a community service project that supports the illness/defect/injury you are learning about.
_____ 4. Try living for a day as if you had the illness/defect/injury you are learning about. Keep in mind dietary requirements, mobility issues, etc. How would your everyday activities have to change? (Do NOT take any medication, this is a simulation only!!!)
_____ 5. Find out what programs there are at your school for kids with special needs. Can you volunteer to help?
_____ 6. Find out what government programs there are available for kids with special needs and
_____ 7. Volunteer to help a mother with a special needs child.
_____ 8. Learn about the special characteristics of child w/special needs. What technology is available to help them?
_____ 9. Find out what support/research groups there are for the illness/defect you are learning about. Try to find at least three.
_____ 10. Earn the kindness badge or another character badge that relates to special needs such as patience.
_____ 11. Read an inspirational story about someone with special needs.
_____12. Tour a day care, camp, school, or charity that caters to those with special needs.
_____ 13. Learn how the illness/defect/injury occurs.
