Sports (Specific) Badge

A separate badge may be earned for any sport. Some examples may include soccer, badminton, volleyball, softball, basketball, golf, cheer leading, skating, or skiing.  This list is not all inclusive and we can make a badge for any sport you choose.

 

Penguins – Do 3 requirements including the 1 starred

________1.* Learn three basic rules for how to play your sport. Learn at least one good drill that can be used to practice a skill needed in your sport and try it out.

________ 2. *How should you dress when you play this sport? What kind of shoes should you wear?

 

Otters – Do 4 requirements including the 2 starred

________1.* Learn the rules of your sport and be able to explain them to others. Find at least 3 good drills that can be used to practice skills needed in your sport and try them out.

________2*. Know how to properly select the equipment and attire for your sport as well as how to properly care and store your equipment.

 

Dolphins – Do 5 requirements including the 2 starred

________1.* Learn the rules of your sport and be able to explain them to others. Find at least 5 good drills that can be used to practice skills needed in your sport and master them. Know how to properly select the equipment and attire for your sport as well as how to properly care and store your equipment.

________2*. Know the safety rules for your sport and learn the first aid necessary to treat the most common injuries. What type of competitions and tournaments are connected to your sport? Is this a sport you can compete in locally? In what countries is your sport most popular.

 

Butterflies – Do 6 requirements including the 2 starred.

________1.* Learn the rules of your sport and be able to explain them to others. Find at least 7 good drills that can be used to practice skills needed in your sport and master them.

  • Know how to properly select the equipment and attire for your sport as well as how to properly care and store your equipment.
  • Know the safety rules for your sport and learn the first aid necessary to treat the most common injuries.
  • What type of competitions and tournaments are connected to your sport? Is this a sport you can compete in locally?
  • In what countries is your sport most popular?

________ 2.* Take part in some form of competition of your sport on at least 3 different occasions; or, if unable to participate 3 times in your sport where you live, participate in some form of competition of your sport at least once, then read 3 news or magazine articles or an age-appropriate book about your sport.

 

Eagles – Do at least 7 requirements including the 2 starred

________1.* Learn the rules of your sport and be able to explain them to others. Find at least 10 good drills that can be used to practice skills needed in your sport and master them.

  • Know how to properly select the equipment and attire for your sport as well as how to properly care and store your equipment.
  • Know the safety rules for your sport and learn the first aid necessary to treat the most common injuries.
  • What type of competitions and tournaments are connected to your sport? Is this a sport you can compete in locally?
  • In what countries is your sport most popular?
  • Take part in some form of competition of your sport on at least 3 different occasions; or, if unable to participate 3 times in your sport where you live, participate in some form of competition of your sport at least once, then read 3 news or magazine articles or an age-appropriate book about your sport.

________2.* Find out about at least one professional female athlete in your sport. Who is she? Where is she from? What makes her an outstanding athlete? Write a brief article of your findings to share with your troop.

 

Owls – Do at least 9 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1. * Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2

_____ 2. * Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone.   You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.

 

Optional Requirements:

________ 3. (Penguins only) Be able to identify and name three pieces of equipment for your sport.

________ 4. (Penguins and Otters only) Participate in a short friendly game of your chosen sport. (Playing with child-sized versions of the sport’s equipment is acceptable.)

________ 5. What type of competitions and tournaments are connected to your sport? Is this a sport you can compete in locally? In what countries is your sport most popular?

________ 6. Know the safety rules for your sport. Otters and Up must also learn the first aid necessary to treat the most common injuries.

________ 7. If your sport is a team sport, list 3 characteristics that make a good team member. If your sport is an individual sport, list 3 things that help keep you motivated and focused.

________ 8. Make a poster about what good sportsmanship means to you. Butterflies and up must write an essay on what good sportsmanship means to you.

________ 9. (Penguins-Butterflies only) Take part in some form of competition of your sport.

________ 10. Learn the vocabulary for your sport. Know the names of different types of movement, scoring, field or court components, etc. Eagles and up must compile a list of at least 20 terms to share with your troop or a friend who may be interested in the sport.

________ 11. Spend at least 2 (Eagles and up must spend 4 hours) hours showing younger children how to play your sport.

________ 12. Watch a professional competition of your sport either in person or on TV.

________ 13. Help plan and run a competition in your sport

________ 14. Officiate as a referee, umpire, timekeeper, scorekeeper, etc. for a competitive event in your sport.

________ 15. Create a booklet for younger girls explaining how to play your sport.

________ 16. Find out about at least one professional female athlete in your sport. Who is she? Where is she from? What makes her an outstanding athlete? Write a brief article of your findings to share with your troop.

________ 17. Learn the history of your sport. Where and when did it originate? What has changed about the game since then? Eagles and up must write an essay comparing and contrasting the sport when it was first developed and the sport as it is today.

________ 18. Research careers in your chosen sport. What education is required? What pay can be expected for these careers?

________19. Research organizations in your area that promote this sport. Put together an information sheet for people who wish to participate in this sport in your area. Include the contact information for local organizations, parks, courts, etc. that can be used to play this sport, stores that sell equipment for your sport, etc.

________ 20. Are there scholarships available for your sport? If so, to which universities? Find out what they are looking for in their athletes and what agreements are made upon accepting a scholarship.

________ 21.  Complete an entire season as a team member in your sport (minimum 8 games/matches).

________ 22.  Spend four hours fundraising for your sport.  Spend four hours cheering for friends who are competing in your sport.

________ 23.  Read or watch movies of historical accounts/figures in your sport, such as the movies Hoosiers, Glory Road, Chariots of Fire, and Soul Surfer.  Be sure to get permission from a parent on any movies as many of them are not appropriate for all ages.
