You may use any higher level requirement as an optional requirement.
Penguin: Do three requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Create a craft using a tie dye technique. For example, you can tie dye coffee filters and make them into butterfly wings by pinching them in a cloths pin used as the body of the butterfly. You can also glue on google eyes and pipe cleaner antennas if you like. You can use simple food dyes dissolved in water to dye the coffee filters.

_____2.* With the help of an adult, tie-dye an article of clothing.


Otter: Do four requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Penguin requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Show how to properly prepare a work area to avoid staining things you want to keep clean.

 

Dolphin: Do five requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Otter requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Show how to properly clean all supplies and your work area.


Butterfly: Do six requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Dolphin requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Know what types of dyes can be used and how to set the dye.


Eagle: Do seven requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Butterfly requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Create at least two different patterns such as circles or lines using tie dye.

 

Owl: Do nine requirements including the two starred *

_____1.* Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2.

_____2.* Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.


Optional Requirements:

_____3. Learn about the history of tie dye. When and where was it first used? How have the techniques and
styles changed? When did it first become popular in modern American culture?

_____4. Learn how to remove dye stains.

_____5. Tie dye a household article such as curtains or a dish towel

_____6. Learn how to make one of the tie dye patterns or techniques below (this requirement may be repeated
several times as further optional requirements).

  • Circles/Bulls-eye
  • Stripes
  • Gradation

_____7. Learn what the Bandhani (also known as Bandhni and Bandhej) technique is. Where do they still
practice this type of tie dye?

_____8. Tie Dye a personal accessory such as a scarf, lunch bag, or hat.

_____9. Visit a store or artist that specializes in tie dye. How many different techniques are used?

_____10. Participate in a service project that involves tie dye. Examples might include hosting a tie dye clinic
for kids in your community, making tie dyed articles to donate to a homeless shelter or rescue mission, or
making tie dye articles to raise money for a charity.

_____11. Research careers that involve tie dye. Examples might include an artist, camp counselor, retail store
owner or manager, hair stylist (yes, they do tie dyed hair!), research and development for a dye company, etc.
What education and training is needed? What salary could you expect? What hours might you need to work?
Where might you need to live?

_____12. Make your own natural dyes from items such as blackberries, marigolds, onion, or red cabbage.
What is the best way to set a natural dye?

_____13. Make a tie dyed treat and share it with your family or troop.

_____14. Explain the roll that tie dye played in the U.S. during the 20’s and 30’s when times were tough. Try a
tie dye craft from this era.
