Penguin: Do 3 requirements including the 2 starred

_____1.* Go on a trip with your family to somewhere you have never been before. Discuss how your group is going to stay together and what to do if you are separated from your group.

_____2.* Help with the packing for a trip. What kinds of clothing will you need where you are going?  What about toiletries?  Things to stay busy?

 

Otter:  Do 4 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1.* Do Penguin requirements 1 & 2, but go on an overnight trip.

_____ 2.* Show that you know how to pack your own bag for an overnight trip.   What kinds of clothing will you need where you are going?  What about toiletries?  Things to stay busy?  Show that you can fold your own clothes and fit everything you need into one bag.  Know how heavy of a bag you can handle on your own without hurting yourself.

 

Dolphin:  Do 5 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1.* Do Otter requirements 1 & 2 – your trip should be at least 2 nights.

_____ 2.*  Demonstrate your knowledge of proper behavior on trains, buses, planes, or cars so that you are courteous to fellow travelers and leave no trace of litter or vandalism in restrooms, waiting rooms, etc.

 

Butterfly:  Do 6 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1.* Do Dolphin Requirements 1 & 2

_____ 2.* Plan a real or imaginary trip at least 300 miles from your home.  Include detailed plans and budgets for the following items:

Mode of transportation (include all necessary transportation including rental cars, etc. if necessary.)
Routes
Meals
Lodging
Activities
Baggage
Timetables

 

Eagle:  Do 7 requirements including the 2 starred

_____ 1.* Do Butterfly requirements 1 & 2 – If you earned this badge at the Butterfly level you must plan a trip to a different location.

_____ 2.* Understand the different rate structures for a specific mode of transportation such as a plane or train.  How does the passenger’s age effect the price?  What about advance purchase verses last minute purchases or the quality of your seating?

 

Owl:  Do 9 requirements including the 2 starred:

_____ 1. * Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2

_____ 2. * Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone.   You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge.   If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.

 

Optional Requirements:

_____ 3. (Penguin-Otter) Demonstrate your knowledge of proper behavior on trains, buses, planes, or cars so that you are courteous to fellow travelers and leave no trace of litter or vandalism in restrooms, waiting rooms, etc.

_____ 4.  Create a scrapbook of a trip.  Include journaling of your different activities, photos, and physical mementos such as plane tickets, or show programs.

_____ 5.  (Penguins and Otters only) Cars, bikes, and trains are just a few of the different modes of transportation you can use to travel. How many more can you think of?  What about modes of transportation used in other countries such as elephants or rickshaws?

_____ 6.  Practice ordering a meal in a restaurant and demonstrate polite behavior and table manners. (Butterflies and up) Learn how to calculate a 10%, 15%, and 20% tip and how to go about leaving one.

_____ 7.  Earn the foreign language badge.

_____ 8.  (Penguin-Dolphin Only) Show that you can use a telephone directory to find things like restaurants, movie theaters, and medical help.  Role play different phone conversations you may have on a trip.

_____ 9.  Know the rules of taking pets on planes, trains, buses and boats.

_____ 10.  (Penguin-Dolphin) Plan a real or pretend trip for your family.  Where would you go?  How would you get there?  What would you do or see?  What would you do for food or lodging?

_____ 11.  Read a book or travel magazine about another country.

_____ 12.  (Penguin-Butterfly) Understand the different rate structures for a specific mode of transportation such as a plane or train.  How does the passenger’s age effect the price?  What about advance purchase verses last minute purchases or the quality of your seating?

_____ 13.  What careers are there in the travel industry?  Pick one to research.  What type of education is needed?  What salary can you expect?  How much travel would you be doing?

_____ 14.  Know where to find, and how to use first aid and emergency equipment on planes, trains, buses and boats.

_____ 15.  As a service project, put together a visitor’s guide to your town.  What type of things would a traveler need to know?  Make sure to include items such as family activities, cultural or historical sites, medical care, post offices, and lodging.  Copy and donate your booklets to realtors, the chamber of commerce, travel agents, and others you feel may be able to use them.

_____ 16.  Learn about natural disasters that occur in different parts of the world.  Learn what to do in each type of emergency.

_____ 17.  Demonstrate your knowledge of security issues on different modes of transportation.  What are you not allowed to bring on board?  What packing requirements are there?  What things are you not allowed to say, even if you are joking (about bombs, fire, terrorists, etc.)  What is the proper procedure for going through the security stations and x-ray stations?

_____ 18.  Learn what documentation is needed to travel to other at least 5 different countries.  What is the difference between a passport and a visa?  How do you get them?
