U.S. Geography Badge

Penguin: Do three requirements including the two starred.
_____ 1 * Find the United States on a world map or globe. Identify the two countries and the two oceans that flank the U.S.
_____ 2.* Find your state on the map. Know your state capital. Find your hometown on a state map.
Otter: Do four requirements including the two starred.
_____ 1.* Do Penguin requirements 1 & 2. Identify each of the states that border your own.
_____ 2. * Know and find the U.S. capital (Washington, D.C.) on a map. For what does D.C. stand?
Dolphin: Do five requirements including the two starred.
_____ 1.* Do Otter requirements 1 & 2.
_____ 2.* On a map, identify the longest river, biggest lake, tallest mountain, deepest canyon and largest desert in the United States.
Butterfly: Do six requirements including the two starred.
_____ 1.* Do Dolphin requirements 1 & 2.
_____ 2.* Identify all 50 states on a blank map of the U.S. and know the capital of each.
Eagle: Do seven requirements including the two starred.
_____ 1.* Do Butterfly requirements 1 & 2.
_____ 2.* Know what a U.S. Territory is and how it differs from a state. Find out how many there are, their names and where they are located. Find each of them on a map.
Owl: Do nine requirements including the two starred.
_____ 1. * Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2
_____ 2. * Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone. You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge. If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.
_____ 3. Earn the state badge your state and for at least one other..
_____ 4. What is GPS and how does it work? Find the satellite coordinates for your home.
_____ 5. Recite all 50 states. (There are songs on youtube to help with this).
_____ 6. U.S. Military Bases are also considered U.S. Territory. Find at least 6 on a map.
_____ 7. Read a book that is set in a specific state and/or city. Look the location up on a map. Examples: Sam the Minuteman (set in Boston, MA), Many of the American Girl books have a specific locations as well.
_____ 8. Read an age-appropriate magazine article that is located in a certain state in the U.S. Find the location on the map. Good sources are Your Big Backyard, Ranger Rick, Click Magazine, Muse, Ask, National Geographic for Kids etc.
_____ 9. Earn the Map Reading Badge.
_____ 10. Find the location of our National Parks on a map. Penguins, find 3, Otters, 5, Dolphins 10, Butterflies, 15, Eagles 20, and Owls 25.
_____ 11. Identify the following on a map of the U.S.:
--The Great Lakes, and if you are a higher level, be able to identify which lake is which
_____ 12. Find each of the 6 major mountain ranges in the U.S. on a map.
_____ 13. There are 7 major rivers in the U.S. Identify them on a map.
_____ 14. Know which states are considered to be in each of the following categories:
_____ 15. Look on a map to find the borders of the various time zones. Which states are included in which zone? What zone are you in? If it was 5:00pm your time, what time would be in California? What time would it be in New York?
_____ 16. Know which states were the 13 original colonies. Find them on a map of the U.S. Label them on a paper map.
_____ 17. Put together an age appropriate puzzle of the U.S.
_____ 18. Color blank map of the U.S. Penguins: Write the 2 letter abbreviation on your state. Otters: Write the 2 letter abbreviation on all states. Dolphins: Write the full name on each state. You may use numbers to mark the smaller states and write the state name in the margin next to a corresponding number. Butterfly - Owls: Do Dolphin requirement, but write capital AND state.
