Vegetable Badge

For this badge, vegetables are what are commonly considered vegetables, rather than the botanical definitions.

Penguin:  Do three requirements including the two starred.

 

_____ 1.* Choose a vegetable you have never or rarely eaten.  Eat some and share with at least one person.

 

_____ 2.*  Plant a vegetable either by seed or seedling and watch it grow.

 

 

Otter:  Do four requirements including the 2 starred

 

_____ 1.* Do Penguin requirements # 1 & 2.

 

_____*2.* Choose two vegetables and find out what vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients are in them.  What do you need these vitamins and minerals for?  How much would you need to eat of your vegetable in order to get 100% of the daily recommended amount of one nutrient (choose whichever nutrient you want)?

 

 

Dolphins:  Do 5 requirements including the two starred.

 

_____ 1.*  Do Otter requirement 1, but choose 2 different vegetables that you have rarely eaten to eat and share.

 

_____ 2.*  Do Otter requirement 2, but choose 3 different vegetables.

 

 

Butterflies:  Do 6 requirements including the two starred.

 

_____ 1.*  Do Otter requirement 1, but choose 3 different vegetables that you have rarely eaten to eat and share.  Do Otter requirement 2, but choose 4 different vegetables.

 

_____ 2.*  Learn about the botanical families that different vegetables are in.  Find out about at least 3 families and locate all the common members you can find at the grocery store.

 

 

Eagles:  Do 7 requirements including the two starred.

 

_____ 1.*  Do Otter requirement 1, but choose 4 different vegetables that you have rarely eaten to eat and share.  Do Otter requirement 2, but choose 5 different vegetables.

 

_____ 2.*  Learn about the botanical families that different vegetables are in.  Find out about at least 4 families and locate all the common members you can find at the grocery store.

 

 

Owl:  Do 9 requirements including the two starred.

 

_____ 1. *  Do Eagle requirements 1 & 2

 

_____ 2. *  Teach someone how to do a skill from this badge or teach some knowledge about this badge to someone.   You can teach kids, your spouse, seniors, anyone, just as long as you are sharing your new found knowledge.   If for some reason you cannot teach what you have learned to someone else, you may choose an additional 2 optional requirements instead.

 

Optional requirements:

 

_____ 3.  Visit a farm that grows vegetables and sells them.

_____ 4.  Learn about the botanical families that different vegetables are in.  Find out about at least 2 families and locate all the common members you can find at the grocery store.

_____ 5.   Eat one vegetable in four different ways such as:  raw, boiled, steamed, baked, sautéed, cooked after being frozen, grilled, creamed, or broiled.

_____ 6.  Volunteer at a community vegetable garden or seed bank.

_____ 7.  Preserve at least three vegetables using at least one method such as drying, freezing or canning.

_____ 8.  Grow at least three vegetables in your garden and prepare them in at least two ways each.

_____ 9.  Choose a vegetable and serve it three different ways, one for breakfast, one for lunch, and one for dinner.

_____ 10.  Create garnishes using two different vegetables.

_____ 11. Make a craft using vegetables, such as a Mr. Potato Head out of a real potato.

_____ 12.  Visit an ethnic market and find out about some of their unusual vegetables.  Learn where they originated and which ethnic groups use them a lot in their cooking.  Find a recipe for each (you don’t have to prepare the recipe, just make sure you taste the vegetable).

_____ 13.  Use two vegetables in a dish that combines vegetables and a bread product (think pot pie, pizza, quiche, etc.).

_____ 14.  Use a vegetable in a dessert such as pumpkin pie or carrot cake.

_____ 15.  Use at least two vegetables while making food for a needy family.

_____ 16.  Take a vegetable and use it in a ‘one-pot’ meal such as a stew.
