A Note From the Founder – A COVID 19 Summer

Well, this summer is going to look a bit different for most people. I don’t know what things look like in your state, but our state is slowly shutting back down again as our cases of COVID 19 are on the rise. Masks are mandated anytime we are out in public and in all indoor spaces. And while stay at home orders have been lifted they are coming back in at least a few of our counties.
The good news is that badges can help keep kids busy over the summer and have something to share with friends even if it is just through Zoom or Facetime. Jump on the Frontier Girls Forum Facebook group and help us brainstorm fun and unusual summertime activities. Just this morning Lisa, our membership coordinator, posted a great idea for turning the dandelions in your backyard into easy and fun works of art. Its a great project for earning your Wildflowers badge or your Crafts badge.
Being stuck at home is a great time to explore your own surroundings. Head out to your backyard with your kids and make a list of what you find. Use the Seek app or iNaturalist to identify bugs and plants that you see and then earn a badge and learn about them. Collect leaves, feathers, stones, bark or other items from your yard and work on your Art in Nature badge.
If it gets too hot, head indoors and try making your own puppet theater and puppets to make a puppet show for the family while earning your Puppets badge or turn your favorite fairy tale into a short play to put on complete with costumes. You could earn your Costume Design or Drama badge.
Don’t let the current situation crush your creativity and curiosity. Embrace it and use it as a way to explore the things right there in your own home.
Girl of the Month – Annalise Wolf, Pioneer in Kenya
Annalise Wolf is a Pioneer Frontier Girl who lives in Kenya. I am very proud to announce that she has recently earned every single award possible at the Dolphins level. If you can’t tell from her vest, this is one motivated kid! Annlaise has been a Frontier Girls since the Penguin level and as been very active in the program for years. She must have earned her Patience badge many times over as shipping her badges and awards across the world always takes a bit of coordinating and it is never quick.
Congratulations Annalise on your amazing accomplishment!
New Badge Posted
July 4th Celebration Ideas
When everything we normally do is canceled
Unfortunately, this year many of our traditions have been canceled due to social distancing and stay at home orders. Traditions that may have included community parades, BBQ’s with friends and family, going to the beach or park for 4th of July picnic, and/or gathering together with your community to watch a big fireworks show at the end of the day. Don’t stay home and do nothing!! July 4th can still be an exciting time in 2020… it just may look different. Try to fill in the gaps with one of these ideas…
Community July 4th Parade has been canceled – Instead revisit history through a VIRTUAL ONLINE TOUR with your family. Maybe try the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History
No one can host a big backyard BBQ or party at the beach this year – Then have a SPORTS-A-THON with your own family. Set up a volleyball or badminton net, invest in corn hole equipment, and toss around a few hula hoops. Just make sure all ages at your house will have a sport to participate in. If your family is interested, have a friendly competition with fun prizes.
Break out the chalk! – Create your own colorful fireworks on your driveway or write out the preamble to the constitution to remind yourself what the day is all about. Turn your driveway into a colorful patriotic explosion!
The local fireworks show was canceled – Watch a movie under the stars! After the sun goes down, consider getting a projector and outdoor screen to watch a movie. Pop some popcorn and make some s’mores. Stand by Me, Top Gun, National Treasure, or the animation film An American Tail just to name a few would be great to watch together with the family.
WHATEVER you decide to do to celebrate we hope you find some fun in the middle of these trying times….And who knows, maybe even a new tradition!

Each banner has a level ribbon associated with the level at which the badges were earned.
BADGE OF THE WEEK
We hope many of you have been enjoying our Badge of the Week posted on our Facebook page. Make sure to follow our Facebook page to get daily resources for each week’s badge (Liking the page is good too, but the posts will only show on your news feed if you follow.) If you have requests for badges we should highlight just let us know. The goal is to provide ideas and resources to keep everyone busy with projects they enjoy.
If you use any of the badge of the week resources, please share your pictures and stories with us as you go through the week on the Frontier Girl Forum. If you know of other resources that go along with the weekly badge, we encourage you to share those as well. Share your creativity and encourage someone else in the group to earn the badge with you.
Support Our Service Members
Frontier Girls has always been a strong supporter of our active military, but sometimes getting care packages delivered can be a challenge without a direct contact overseas. I am proud to announce that we will now be working directly with MSgt. Les Greer at the USAF base in Qatar. Care packages will be distributed through a ministry on base called “Jack’s Place.”
If you would like to participate and send care packages, please read the message from MSgt Greer below that outlines what they are looking for and where to send them. If you have not sent care packages overseas before, it is usually best to use the flat rate boxes through the post office as they will only charge you domestic rates and you can pack the box as heavy as possible for no extra charge. Keep in mind the weather gets hot there so try not to send items that melt or have strong smells. Make sure to put anything that could smell or melt in separate ziplock baggies just in case.
Cards and posters are also always appreciated as they show our service members how much they are loved and appreciated. Just make sure not to use glitter which can make a mess and actually be a danger to our military if it gets on their clothing. Keep any cards, drawings, letters, etc. happy and upbeat.
